Baltimore City Recreation & Parks has earned its first National Gold Medal Grand Plaque, recognizing the department’s work in parks management,
recreation services, and long-term planning.
Baltimore City Recreation & Parks has received the 2026 National Gold Medal Award Program Grand Plaque, marking the department’s first national distinction. Presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the award recognizes excellence in long-range planning, resource management, environmental stewardship, and innovative service delivery.
The recognition follows several years of investment in Baltimore City’s parks and recreation infrastructure. Over the past six years, the department has completed 40 playground renovations or replacements, advanced eight new or renovated recreation centers, including projects still under construction, and added eight aquatic centers. These investments are part of the City’s broader efforts to modernize aging facilities, expand access to recreation opportunities, and improve public spaces across Baltimore neighborhoods.
“We have made historic investments in recreation centers, playgrounds, pools and parks because these are essential public spaces that strengthen neighborhoods and bring Baltimoreans together,” said Mayor Brandon Scott.
Baltimore City received the Grand Plaque in the Class I category, which recognizes parks and recreation agencies serving populations of more than 400,000 residents. Looking ahead, the department plans to release The Playbook in 2027, a 10-year strategic plan that will establish measurable goals for parks and recreation services. The plan will incorporate data and equity mapping to guide future investments and expand access to recreation facilities and amenities throughout the city.
