Frederick County Secures New Funding To Expand Reforestation Program

Frederick County is expanding its Creek ReLeaf reforestation program with more than $1.5 million in new state and federal grants, supporting efforts to convert eligible land into permanently protected forests.

Frederick County’s Creek ReLeaf program is accepting applications from landowners who want to convert open or underused land into permanent forests. Eligible property owners with at least two contiguous acres may receive up to $9,000 per acre, along with five years of professional forest maintenance at no cost.

Through the program, the County coordinates tree planting, covers associated costs, and maintains newly established forests during their first five years. Landowners retain ownership of their property and may continue recreational and other compatible uses. Since its 2017 launch, Creek ReLeaf has helped plant more than 650 acres of native trees throughout Frederick County.

The program recently secured a $904,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to expand local reforestation efforts. An additional $649,800 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will support converting a former golf course near Lake Linganore into protected forest.

From the press release:

“Creek ReLeaf gives us an opportunity to invest in our rural landowners and public lands within Frederick County,” said Project Manager Linda Williamson. “We bring in funding that helps property owners care for land that may otherwise be difficult or costly to maintain and creates forests that will benefit our community for generations.”

The initiative demonstrates how counties can combine state and federal funding with local program administration to support long-term land conservation while providing financial incentives and technical assistance to property owners. Applications are open through December 31, 2026. Frederick County will also host informational sessions throughout October, November, and December to help interested landowners learn about eligibility and program requirements.
