MACoCon attendees — who are often deeply involved in the hiring and retention of county employees — learned about best practices in employment policy as part of the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance.
At the 2021 MACo Winter Conference Academy Core Sessions, “ Employment Issues,” Academy Core participants learned about preferred employment practices and the legal restrictions involved in hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining employees.
The session course was moderated by Anne Arundel County Council Member Jessica Haire and was taught by Kevin Karpinski, partner at Karpinski, Cornbrooks and Karp, PA.
Karpinski addressed how positions should be advertised and interviews conducted, among other hiring best practices. He also explored risk management techniques concerning proper supervision of employees.
While the session was open to all MACoCon attendees, fellows in the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance earned Core credit for their participation.
The session was held on December 10, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Maryland.
