Montgomery County has approved a new zoning initiative designed to accelerate development of large, job-creating projects, as part of an effort to attract
new employers, strengthen economic competitiveness, and spur private-sector investment.
The Job Creation Project zoning amendment establishes an expedited development review process for projects that create at least 200 net new jobs and meet certain economic development criteria. Eligible projects include those in strategic industries identified in the county’s Economic Development Strategic Plan, select sectors such as biohealth and advanced technology, and projects that receive county or state economic development incentives.
“Montgomery County’s continued success is dependent on bringing together public and private sector partners to create an environment where businesses can grow, innovate and invest,” said Jared Smith, president and CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation. “We look forward to continuing to work with our community partners on expanding opportunities for our County.”
County leaders say the streamlined review process is intended to make it easier and more predictable for businesses to invest in Montgomery County while supporting projects that bring significant employment opportunities. The new zoning tool builds on similar expedited review processes already available for biohealth development, mixed-income communities, and office-to-residential conversion projects. County officials say expanding the approach to major job creation projects will help reduce regulatory timelines while supporting long-term economic growth.
