In Allegany County, the mountain town of Frostburg adds a high-speed tradition to its Independence Day festivities: homemade derby cars racing down historic Main Street.

Every Fourth of July, locals and visitors gather for the Frostburg Elks Derby Day, a beloved tradition that has become one of Allegany County’s most unique celebrations. Now in its 49th year, the Frostburg Elks Derby Day transforms downtown Frostburg into a lively racecourse as more than 60 handcrafted derby cars speed downhill through the heart of town. Drivers, ages 9 to 14, compete in a double-elimination tournament while spectators line the sidewalks to cheer on family members, neighbors, and friends.
What makes Derby Day especially memorable isn’t just the racing—it’s the sense of community behind it. Many of the derby cars are lovingly maintained and passed down through generations, with parents and grandparents helping today’s racers compete in the very same cars they once drove themselves. Local businesses sponsor racers, volunteers help organize the event, and nearly the entire town turns out to celebrate, making Derby Day as much about community pride as it is about friendly competition. This deep-rooted tradition was recognized with a 2024 Maryland Heritage Award for preserving an important piece of the state’s living culture.
If you’re looking to experience a Fourth of July celebration that’s equal parts hometown tradition and unforgettable adventure, head to Frostburg. You might come for the derby cars, but you’ll leave with a new appreciation for the charm, history, and hospitality that make Allegany County one of Maryland’s hidden gems.
