Anne Arundel County has broken ground on a new $17 million Transportation Operations Facility, a long-term infrastructure investment designed to
support the county’s expanding transit system and future mobility needs.
Located on a 7.7-acre site in Glen Burnie, the facility will provide a permanent home for the county’s transit operations while supporting fleet maintenance, administrative functions, and future service expansion. Once complete, the facility will also include infrastructure to accommodate electric transit vehicles, helping position the county for cleaner transportation technologies. The project is reported to be a key component of the Move Anne Arundel! Transportation Master Plan, intending to strengthen the operational backbone needed to support continued transit growth and improve mobility for residents.
“Today’s groundbreaking represents more than the start of construction,” said Department of Public Works Director Karen Henry. “This facility will strengthen the foundation of our transit system and reflects our commitment to providing dependable public services through thoughtful, long-term infrastructure investments.”
According to County Executive Steuart Pittman, in recent years the county has expanded transit routes, modernized its fleet, eliminated fares, and seen transit ridership increase. With that observation, the new operations facility should provide the infrastructure needed to support that continued growth. The facility is also expected to improve operational resilience, create opportunities for future service expansion, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through support for electric transit vehicles. Construction should be completed by summer 2027.
