Baltimore County Launches Sustainability Leadership Coalition

Baltimore County has launched a new Sustainability Leadership Coalition, bringing together businesses,A lightbulb laying in the grass nonprofits, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and government agencies to strengthen sustainability efforts and share best practices across the county.

County Executive Kathy Klausmeier announced the coalition at its inaugural gathering at Towson University, describing the initiative as an opportunity to connect organizations already investing in environmental stewardship, energy efficiency, and community resilience.

From the press release:

“Sustainability is about more than protecting the environment. It’s about making Baltimore County a healthier place to live and work where people can raise families,” Klausmeier said. “This coalition will help us share ideas and build on the progress already happening in communities all over Baltimore County.”

The coalition will convene quarterly and serve as a forum for members to exchange strategies on issues ranging from renewable energy and building efficiency to local food systems, waste reduction, and transportation. Initial coalition members include institutions from across education, healthcare, and community sectors, including Towson University, UMBC, Baltimore County Public Schools, Baltimore County Public Library, Civic Works, LifeBridge Health, and Sheppard Pratt.

Baltimore County officials highlighted several recent sustainability investments already underway, including the expansion of hybrid and electric vehicles in the county fleet, renewable energy procurement, a new green purchasing policy, and energy efficiency improvements supported by state grant funding. Partner organizations have also reported significant sustainability gains, from preserving open space and natural areas to reducing carbon emissions and cutting long-term energy costs.

This coalition reflects a growing interest among counties in forming cross-sector partnerships to support environmental goals while improving operational efficiency, resilience, and quality of life for residents.
