Frederick County Council Primary Election Wrap-Up

Frederick County Council seat races remain tight in a number of spots for Democratic candidates but with Republican nominations all clear.

The Frederick County Council includes seven members — five are elected by district and two are elected county-wide.

At-Large – Of the six candidates for county-wide election to the Frederick County Council, four were Democrats and two Republicans. Pamela Ciliberti (R) and Jack Felton (R) won their party’s nominations for the two at-large seats. The Democratic primary is still too close to call with Tiffany Grant (D) holding a convincing lead followed by incumbents Renee Knapp (D) and Brad. W Young (D) close behind.

District 1 – Frank J. Hollewa (R) ran unopposed. Louisa Conklin (D) won the party nomination with 59 percent of the vote. Incumbent Jerry Donald (D) ran for the Maryland House of Delegates District 4.

District 2 – Shelly J. Beaird-Francois (D) and Jamie Shopland (D) competed for the party nomination with Shopland appearing to edge out Beaird-Francois by 17 points. Dan Iampieri (R) won the Republican primary nomination with 64 percent of the vote against Kai Burhans (R). Incumbent Steven McKay (R) did not seek re-election.

District 3 – Tammie Baugher (R) ran uncontested and will continue on to the general election in November. Christian Benford (D) leads against Natasha Valencia (D) by almost 9 points. Incumbent, and current MACo President, M.C. Keegan-Ayer (D) is term-limited.

District 4 – Incumbent Kavonte Duckett (D) and Chaz Packan (R) both ran unopposed in their party primaries and will move on to November.

District 5 – Incumbent Mason Carter (R) and Johnny Mercer (D) both ran unopposed and will move on to November.
