Longtime Delegate Rudy Cane Retiring

On Wednesday, February 26, Delegate Rudy Cane announced his retirement when he decided to no longer run for re-election, giving Wicomico Council Member Sheree Sample-Hughes an unchallenged election for the District 37A delegation seat this fall.  Delegate Cane himself served on the Wicomico County Council, prior to serving in the House of Delegates.

From the delmarvanow.com article (limited views available),

Cane has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 1999 and was also a Wicomico County councilman prior to that.

His withdrawal also adds to an interesting primary campaign that began when Cane told Sample-Hughes to run, because he wouldn’t for health reasons.

Soon after, Cane said, one of his doctors said he should be able to campaign and serve another four-year term in the state legislature. In the interim, Cane donated $6,000 to Sample-Hughes’ campaign.

If Cane had withdrawn before Tuesday, there would have been the possibility other candidates running, but Tuesday at 9 p.m. marked the deadline for candidates to register with the Board of Elections.
