Maryland’s Independent Investigations Division Seeks New Leadership

Two recent resignations from the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General lead to search for new leadership in the unit that handles officer-involved deaths.

In a recent announcement by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG),  Jennifer Dolan – a spokesperson for the office – shared that Chief Allison Green and Deputy Chief Renee Martel Joy of the Independent Investigations Division (IID) have resigned. Their departures have prompted the search for the divisions newest leadership and comes in the wake of a recent dismissal, by an Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge, of the agencies first prosecution attempt under the IID.

According to annual reports and the dashboard available on the IID website, since October 2021, 69 out of 80 cases have not led to charges against officers. Two cases were handled by the attorney general and one was by the local state’s attorney. The rest are open and actively under investigation.
