Anne Arundel County has a new emergency manager, and the position will now report directly to the County Executive, as described by the Baltimore Sun.

The position was previously filled through the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. According to the Sun, the County Council passed legislation enacting the change in September.

Aftung previously served as Emergency Services Director for Queen Anne’s County. In that role, Aftung worked closely with fellow Eastern Shore emergency managers and MACo on radio interoperability issues. Aftung advocated for an inclusive governance board for Maryland First, and advanced interest in creating an emergency services affiliate at MACo.

As described in the Sun, the County Executive intends the change to ensure quality emergency response.

“Now more than ever, we need to ensure a quick and effective response to any emergency in Anne Arundel County,” Schuh said in a statement Monday. “Kevin brings the knowledge and experience needed to ensure that we will be ready for any challenge.”
