Baltimore City’s Enoch Pratt Free Library is seeking $300 million to address critical needs in an extensive five-year revitalization project to repair infrastructure and modernize technology across its 22 branches.
As reported by The Baltimore Banner, the five-year strategic plan stresses needed investments for essential infrastructure upgrades ($197.3 million) and advanced technology improvements ($80 million).
Pratt Library’s record-breaking usership highlights its critical role in the community and drives the need for improvements. Upgrading technology will ensure that patrons have access to the latest digital resources, while infrastructure improvements will create safer, more welcoming environments.
The plan relies on State, local, and private funding to fund repairs and expansion. Mayor Brandon Scott has already allocated $10.8 million to replace HVAC systems in six libraries and an additional $2.5 million for interior upgrades in seven locations.
The plan also focuses on staff development, ensuring that Pratt Library employees are well-equipped to meet patrons’ diverse needs and fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. From educational workshops to cultural events, diverse programming will cater to all age groups and interests, ensuring the library remains a vibrant center of community life.
This comprehensive strategy underscores the Pratt Library’s commitment to serving as a modern, accessible community hub for all Baltimoreans.
Libraries as a Community Connector

Through new technology, creative programming, and proactive outreach, libraries have emerged as active, dynamic community connectors.
At this year’s MACo Summer Conference session, “Libraries as a Community Connector,” an expert panel will share best practices for leveraging the library system to build stronger, more connected communities.
MACo’s Summer Conference, “Turning the Tide,” is August 14-17, 2024, at the Roland Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland.
