Record vacancy levels and near-constant overtime shifts are compounding the staffing crisis in detention centers across the state.
A recent Baltimore Banner article continues to track the staffing issues in state prisons. This is an issue plaguing both the larger state facilities and smaller local detention centers. Legislators were updated on the situation at the beginning of the 2024 legislative session by state and union representatives. Governor Moore’s GAPS Act and a handful of other proposals from state lawmakers could help address the issue as health and safety concerns for incarcerated individuals and staff continue to rise.
