MACo’s Summer Conference – “Where the Rubber Meets the Road” – is coming up August 16-19, 2023, at the Roland Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, MD.
MACo’s Summer Conference brings together more than 3,000 individuals from across the public and private sectors to focus on county governance needs and best practices. As always, MACo Members – as county leaders – are striving to deepen their skills in leadership and strategic vision, so the 2023 Summer Conference Keynote presentation will focus on leadership during changing times.
MACo is proud to announce our Keynote Speaker is Valerie Sheares Ashby, President of the University of Maryland Baltimore County!
Valerie Sheares Ashby began as the sixth president of UMBC on August 1, 2022. The first woman to serve in this role, she also holds a faculty appointment in UMBC’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Sheares Ashby joined UMBC from Duke University, where she had served since 2015 as dean of the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. As dean, she led the development and implementation of strategic plans that resulted in significant new investments in faculty recruitment and development, philanthropy, and student engagement, and a realignment of operations that enhanced services and created operational efficiencies. Throughout, she consistently advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion as imperative to excellence in both teaching and research.

Description: Maryland’s residents and communities depend on their local governments to provide the resources they need in their day-to-day lives. But the times, they are a’changin’…the post-COVID world has introduced never-before-seen challenges for the way government works. To serve Marylanders at the level they expect and deserve, public leaders must embrace this evolution and respond innovatively to the needs of their communities – which could bring about meaningful results for Marylanders and their quality of life. MACo’s keynote speaker will discuss leading through change and the importance of public sector leadership in today’s world.
