Tomorrow: State Board of Education to Discuss Enrollment and Attendance

During the pandemic, MACo has paid keen attention to school enrollment and its critical role in school funding. Tomorrow, January 25, the State Board of Education will take up the issue.

At its January 25 public meeting, the State Board of Education will address school enrollment and attendance, among other topics. The meeting comes as counties are starting to see school enrollment — which temporarily fell during the pandemic — rebound. School enrollment data plays a critical role in Maryland’s school funding formulas, with temporary enrollment having potential long-term impacts on funding.

Leadership on MACo’s Education Subcommittee, in collaboration with the Public School Superintendents Association of Maryland (PSSAM), and the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) reached out to to Senate President Bill Ferguson and House Speaker Adrienne Jones asking them to address the issue during the 2022 legislative session, as they had done in 2021.

The Board’s “priority” agenda items for tomorrow’s meeting include:

  • Stakeholder Engagement Session – Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland (PSSAM)
  • Enrollment and Attendance
  • Reopening Logistics and Transmission Rates in Schools Update
  • Local Education Agency Virtual Programs Update
  • Blueprint Deep Dives:
    • College and Career Readiness
    • Nationally Board Certified Teachers and Low Performing Schools

Tomorrow’s meeting can be live-streamed on the State Board’s website.
