Hard Hits: The Science and Safeguards Behind Concussions

Description

Concussions are now viewed as priority injuries that, if not identified and treated, can result in significant physical, cognitive, and emotional health problems. As science continues to better understand the serious effects of concussions, athletic national  governing bodies have taken actions to respond to the threat they pose and the Maryland General Assembly has passed legislation requiring counties, schools, and leagues to follow certain education, reporting, and treatment requirements. Panelists will discuss the current medical understanding of concussions, changes in best practices (rules, player techniques, etc.) to minimize their occurrence and protect players, and the implementation of education and reporting requirements required under Maryland Law.
