Washington County Contemplating Charter

Delegate Leroy Myers is reportedly leading a revived effort to evaluate charter government for Washington County. From coverage in the Herald-Mail:

The first step in the process to change the form of goverment would be for the commissioners to approve the formation of a charter home rule committee, which would be tasked with drafting a charter that would be presented to the commissioners, Myers said.

The public would have a chance to respond to the draft, and then voters would decide whether to approve or disapprove the measure, Myers said.

Adjacent Frederick County approved (via referendum) a move to charter government in 2012, and will change to that structure with the 2014 elections. Cecil County made the structural change with the 2012 elections, also after a citizen approval.

Washington County has posed the charter question before, most recently in 2008, but it has been rejected by voters.
