Carroll, Montgomery, and Washington counties received funding allocations this week from the Maryland Board of Public Works for recreation and infrastructure improvements.

The Board of Public Works approved a combined $1,692,050 for projects in Carroll, Montgomery, and Washington counties. Carroll County received $123,300 in Program Open Space funding for improvements at Piney Run Park, including replacement of a deteriorating bulkhead and boathouse. Montgomery County received $68,750 in Program Open Space funding for a new playground and safety surfacing at Casey Community Center in Gaithersburg. Washington County received a $1.5M state grant for improvements to its air traffic control tower.

The largest allocation went to Washington County for site improvements to the air traffic control tower at the Hagerstown Regional Airport. The funding was previously approved by the General Assembly as part of the 2026 Capital Budget and does not require a local match.

Carroll

• A request from the Department of Natural Resources to commit additional funding from the Program Open Space funding allocated to Carroll County for the following projects at Piney Run Park:
  • $67,500 replace the existing deteriorating bulkhead
  • $55,800 to replace the deteriorating boathouse

Montgomery

• A request from the Department of Natural Resources to commit $68,750 from the Program Open Space funding allocated to Montgomery County for a new playground and safety surfacing at Casey Community Center in Gaithersburg.

Washington

• A request to enter into a grant agreement for a $1,500,000 grant to the Board of County Commissioners of Washington County, Maryland for the acquisition, planning, design, construction, repair, renovation, reconstruction, site improvement, and capital equipping of the air traffic control tower. There is no matching fund requirement for this grant. The General Assembly previously approved this funding as part of the 2026 Capital Budget.
