Nearly $4.8M Goes to Counties This Week from the Board of Public Works

The Board of Public Works approved just shy of $4.8M for county projects this week including watershed improvements and enhancements for outdoor recreation. 

Three counties this week were granted funding approvals by the Maryland Board of Public Works for various projects. $3.7M came from Program Open Space funding and is to be distributed to Prince George’s and Washington. Prince George’s received the primary share of that allocation with $3.6M coming their way, and $150K going to Washington. Carroll also received a little over $1M from the approvals with their allocation coming from the Rural Legacy Fund.

Carroll

  • A request from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide a $1,038,667.78 grant to Carroll County from Rural Legacy Funds for the acquisition of a 140.91-acre conservation easement in the Upper Patapsco Rural Legacy Area (Fisher property). Acquisition of this easement will protect productive farmland and 2,100 linear feet of buffer along Murphy Run, and an associated unnamed tributary. The property is located in the Prettyboy Reservoir watershed, which is a source of drinking water for the area. The easement, which will be held by the County Commissioners of Carroll County, will also protect over 3,000 feet of scenic road frontage along Green Mount Church Road and Fairmount Road. The County is paying administrative and compliance costs. Easement value: $7,323.41/acre

Prince George’s

  • A request from the Department of Natural Resources to commit $3,600,000 from the Program Open Space funding allocated to Prince George’s County to design and construct a 42,000 sq. ft. indoor tennis facility with 6 courts at Westphalia Central Park. The project includes stormwater management, pedestrian access and a parking lot.

Washington

  • A request from the Department of Natural Resources to commit an additional $150,000 from the Program Open Space funding allocated to Washington County to construct approximately two miles of multi-use trails for walking, hiking, and biking at the Washington County Regional Park. In addition, a 50-space parking lot for increased park access will be added.
