AI That Works: Practical Use Cases at #MACoCon

Artificial intelligence is no longer a future conversation for government; it’s becoming a practical tool for solving everyday operational challenges.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how organizations work, and state and local governments are beginning to identify where these tools can deliver meaningful value. As local governments explore these opportunities, they must also address important questions around governance, data privacy, procurement, workforce impacts, transparency, and public trust. Rather than focusing on what’s possible in theory, this session examines how counties are putting AI to work today, the lessons they’ve learned along the way, and the practical considerations that can help others move from experimentation to responsible implementation.

Description: Artificial intelligence is quickly moving from experimentation to everyday operations in county government. Across Maryland and the nation, counties are using AI tools to improve customer service, streamline administrative tasks, strengthen communications, support workforce capacity, and deliver services more efficiently. But moving from curiosity and pilot programs to practical implementation requires thoughtful planning, leadership, and clear goals. This session will explore examples of how counties are using AI in practical, responsible, and measurable ways. Panelists will discuss lessons learned from early adoption efforts, including identifying high-value use cases, preparing staff, managing risk, navigating procurement and governance challenges, and building public trust. Attendees will hear how counties are balancing innovation with accountability while using AI to support, not replace, the public workforce.
