Visitors have plenty of reasons to flock to Denton in Caroline County, and the town’s new Bird City Maryland designation has just added another.

The historic town of Denton is well-positioned for birding in every season. For many outdoor explorers and birders, the town serves as an obvious starting point for experiencing the county’s natural beauty. This year (2026), Denton has been officially recognized as Caroline County’s first “Bird City Maryland” community. Denton is earning the program’s prestigious “High Flyer” designation for its commitment to bird conservation, environmental stewardship, and community education.
Becoming a Bird City is no small feat. Communities must complete conservation actions in areas such as habitat protection, sustainability, public education, and reducing threats to birds. Denton’s efforts include native plant gardens, educational displays featuring local bird species, partnerships with local schools to build birdhouses, and investments in renewable energy. These initiatives earned the town more than 20 action points, well above the minimum required for recognition.
For visitors, Denton’s new Bird City status is another reason to explore this charming Eastern Shore destination. Whether you’re strolling along the waterfront, paddling the Choptank, attending Summerfest, or simply enjoying the town’s parks and green spaces, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to connect with nature and discover why Denton is truly for the birds, in the best possible way.
