Fun Fact: This Maryland Agency Is Putting Its Own Spin on America’s 250th Anniversary

To celebrate America’s 250th, the Maryland Park Service is encouraging visitors to explore the outdoors and hike 250 miles through the “Miles for Maryland” Trail Challenge.

The challenge encourages visitors to hike a total of 250 miles in Maryland State Parks during 2026 — one mile for every year since the founding of the United States.  From the beaches of Assateague State Park to the mountain views at Deep Creek Lake State Park and the waterfalls at Cunningham Falls State Park, the challenge encourages visitors to experience the variety of landscapes found across Maryland.  Hikers can explore everything from quiet forest trails and marsh boardwalks to scenic shoreline paths as they work toward their 250-mile goal.

Participants can register individually or as a team for a $25 fee by visiting the Maryland Park Service website or designated event portals. Registration includes a keepsake item to commemorate the experience. Hikers who complete all 250 miles during the year will also be eligible for a special prize drawing. Along the way, participants can submit photos with their mileage reports for additional chances to win monthly prizes, making the challenge just as much about sharing memories as reaching the finish line.

From weekend adventures to casual evening walks, “Miles for Maryland” is meant to be flexible and fun for hikers of all experience levels.  It’s also a great excuse to discover a new favorite state park, revisit a familiar trail, or spend more time outside with friends and family.  While registration does not include park entry, many participants may find the experience well worth the trip.

As America’s 250th anniversary approaches, the challenge offers a unique way to celebrate both the nation’s history and Maryland’s natural beauty.  One mile at a time, the “Miles for Maryland” challenge is turning the state’s trails into part of the celebration.
