EPA Announces Funding for Sewer and Stormwater Infrastructure Projects

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced new funding to support sewer overflow and stormwater management projects across the Mid-Atlantic, including funding available to Maryland communities.

The funding comes through the Sewer Overflow and Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grant program, which provides resources to help local governments upgrade infrastructure and reduce pollution entering local waterways.

Of the approximately $80 million made available nationwide, about $14.8 million is allocated across the Mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland.

Maryland is expected to receive approximately:

  • $725,000 in FY2025
  • $725,000 in FY2026

Funding will be distributed through state agencies to support eligible local projects. Outside of being a core public works responsibility and a major capital cost driver, this matters to counties because stormwater and sewer systems play a critical role in protecting water quality and public health. During heavy rain events, aging or undersized systems can lead to expensive complications such as:

  • combined sewer overflows
  • untreated wastewater entering waterways
  • increased pollution from runoff

Managing stormwater effectively is also key to reducing contaminants such as sediment, chemicals, and debris from reaching rivers and streams.
