Governor Moore signals potential further initiatives to refine the strategy for the state education reform plan – the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future (Blueprint). Comments focused on not just spending more but spending responsibly.
During the bill signing to enact the first major changes to the landmark legislation that established the Blueprint, Governor Moore shared that he does not believe lawmakers and the administration went far enough. From the bill signing:
“While this legislation is an important step forward, it can not be the last step that we take on education. While were able to authorize a new academic excellence program to improve literacy, it wasn’t funded. While we refined our strategy to insure we aren’t just spending more but that we are spending smart, it will not surprise any of you, that I believe we did not go far enough.”
Additional comments from the Governor focused on how vital the Blueprint is for growing the state workforce and building new pathways for opportunities for all. A highlight from the remarks was the value of the Grow Your Own Program to encourage and support the entry of new teachers into Maryland schools.
