Every year, scammers contact individuals who are likely to attend MACo’s conference. Please read on for information about the most frequent scams and the most recent – and very convincing – version currently circulating.
The two main scams are “buy MACo’s attendee contact list” and “we’re a housing authority who can help you get a room at a sold-out hotel in Ocean City.” THESE COMPANIES ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH MACo – please do not engage with them.
MACo does not sell attendee contact info – ever.
MACo does not use a housing authority – we book all of the hotel blocks ourselves.
In fact, MACo’s small-but-mighty team of 12 employees handle ALL event-planning aspects in-house, so any company claiming to be an events logistics or support company working on MACo’s behalf is a scammer.
Recently, a very convincing scam has been reported by several individuals:
- When the scammers call, they make it seem as if they are calling from MACo (see voicemail transcript in the image below)
- If you google the telephone number (redacted in image), it shows results for a company called “onPeak”
- The website for this company claims they are a “provider of accommodations in the ever-evolving events industry”
- This entity is NOT affiliated with MACo – if you receive a voicemail or email like the one below, please do not call them or click on anything in their emails
If you clicked on a link that you think might be spam or sent from a scammer, please contact your IT team immediately.
If you received a similar voicemail or phone call and gave the caller any payment information, please alert your Finance Dept so they can take protective action.
MACo looks forward to welcoming our attendees and booth staff to the Summer Conference in August.
