Talbot Empowers Youth With Essential Emergency Skills

In a unique and impactful experience for some of Talbot County’s youth, Madison Loker, the Emergency Services Coordinator at the Talbot County Department of Emergency Services, recently introduced essential emergency preparedness and first aid skills to the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center’s Afterschool Program.

While Loker regularly teaches life-saving emergency response and first aid skills to adults, the class was part of a broader initiative to engage communities on the importance of emergency preparedness, including basic injury care, how to seek help and call 9-1-1, and techniques to stay calm during a crisis.

Teaching children basic first aid is an invaluable life skill that can make a difference in an emergency…whether at home, school, or playing outside, accidents can happen at any time. Knowing how to respond helps children stay calm and assist others effectively. – Madison Loker, Talbot County Press Release

The importance of teaching children life-saving skills cannot be overstated. In fact, many real-life encounters highlight the impact first aid and early intervention can have in emergencies. In 2023, Talbot County native, Sean Gunshenan, used his CPR training from Boy Scouts to save his father’s life.

You never know when these techniques could come in handy. Teaching these skills to as many people as possible strengthens our community’s resilience. Even something as simple as showing children how to call 9-1-1 can give them the confidence to act in a crisis. – Brian LeCates, Director of Emergency Services, Talbot County Press Release

Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference, which is why Loker encourages all students to learn basic first aid techniques and, when ready, pursue certifications in CPR and AED use.

Currently, Loker teaches Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) courses which offer free disaster preparedness techniques to equip residents with practical skills to care for themselves and others in the critical moments before professional first responders arrive.

Looking ahead, Loker plans to debut a new class this June that will focus on pet preparedness, offering valuable tips for keeping pets safe during emergencies.

By teaching essential emergency preparedness and first aid skills to children and adults alike, Talbot County’s Department of Emergency Services is fostering a more resilient and capable community. These programs empower individuals with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in critical situations, ensuring that lifesaving skills are accessible to all.
