Unlock free, high-level cybersecurity training with Maryland’s COMET program—preparing public employees to defend against real-world cyber threats.
Safeguarding government systems and sensitive information is more critical than ever in an increasingly digital world. Maryland’s state and local government employees can bolster their cybersecurity expertise through the Cybersecurity Operational Methods and Education Training (COMET) program.
The Cybersecurity Operational Methods and Education Training (COMET) program, delivered by BCR Cyber and funded through the EARN Maryland grant, offers Maryland state and local government employees a unique, FREE opportunity to enhance their cybersecurity expertise. With COMET, participants build critical skills — from IT fundamentals to advanced CompTIA Security+ certification training — ensuring they are prepared for real-world cybersecurity challenges in an ever-evolving field.
This program offers specialized, high-level cybersecurity training, now available to local governments at no cost through support from the Maryland Department of Labor. The next training cohort starts on January 6, 2025, and registration is open.
Two Training Tracks Available
COMET offers two distinct training tracks, providing flexible options based on experience and career goals:
- Cybersecurity Skills Training for Beginners: A foundational 5-week, 3-part course covering Command Line & Linux, an Introduction to SIEM, and Cyber Range Simulations. The next cohort begins on January 6, 2025, and runs until February 18, 2025, with live instruction from 1 to 3 PM daily. This track is ideal for those building foundational cybersecurity knowledge. Requirements include being a Maryland state or local government employee with at least one year of IT and/or cybersecurity experience and having approval from your manager to attend the training during business hours.
- Advanced Incumbent Training: A 5-week intensive training focusing on security management, network devices, and threat analysis, culminating in a CompTIA Security+ certification test voucher. This track also begins on January 6, 2025, but ends on February 10, 2025, with live instruction from 3 to 5 PM daily. Designed for those with more advanced experience, it requires at least two years of IT and/or cybersecurity experience and manager approval for participation during business hours.
Both training tracks offer an excellent pathway to enhancing skillsets, gaining industry-recognized certifications, and preparing for real-world cybersecurity challenges.
