The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) of Maryland discussed at #MACoCon a number of cases and new initiatives going on across multiple divisions within the department to keep residents safe and bad actors accountable.
The MACo Summer Conference panel, “The OAG: Protecting Marylanders, Wherever They Call Home,” hosted 3 members of Attorney General Brown’s leadership team to give an update on major cases and strategies across four specific units:
- Consumer Protection
- Medicaid Fraud
- Vulnerable Victims
- Civil Rights
Most of the cases in the consumer protection category were a result of home improvement contracts that went bad. Vulnerable victims cases ranged from attacks on vulnerable individuals to tackling systemic abuse and neglect issues in care facilities like nursing homes. The civil rights category highlighted one case with an abusive landlord but focused the bulk of the time outlining the structure and focus of the new division, as its work only began at the beginning of 2024. Now that the reporting portal has gone live on the OAG site, more cases will be forthcoming.
