The Pew Charitable Trusts published three reports outlining how Medicaid funds can be used for medication-assisted treatment in detention centers with the proper waiver.

pills tumble from a prescription bottleFunding for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in local detention centers has been an ongoing challenge in Maryland. As recently as this past legislative session, MACo rallied, unsuccessfully, for the State to fulfill the funding obligation that came with the original MAT mandate for local governments. While that legislation did not pass, one thing that could help alleviate the burden is a Medicaid waiver to allow funds to be used for opioid related treatments in the carceral setting.

The Pew Charitable Trust, in collaboration with The Milbank Memorial Fund, published three reports on exactly how this type of waiver can work including coverage options, payment models, and performance measures.
