Counties Call for Increased State Funding on Medication-Assisted Treatment Services

On February 6, 2024, Associate Policy Director Sarah Sample testified before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee in support of SB 282- Correctional Services- Local Detention Centers- Reporting on Opioid Use Disorder with amendments. This bill provides clarification on reporting requirements for local detention centers providing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to incarcerated individuals with an opioid use disorder.

Local detention centers are responsible for housing and caring for some of the most vulnerable populations in the state. The quality of services these individuals receive while in local facilities can be directly correlated with successful, long-term outcomes. Those full benefits go unrealized when required state funding is not provided.

From MACo Testimony:

Counties believe MAT services for incarcerated individuals are a necessary component to curbing the number of overall opioid fatalities. However, it cannot be done if the resources are not available. State and local government agencies, non-profits, and community-based stakeholders all agree: sustainable funding from the State is necessary in providing these services.

SB 282’s cross-file, HB 203, was heard on March 7, 2024 in the House Judiciary Committee. Sarah Sample testified in support of this bill with amendments.
