Montgomery County Opens New Recreation and Aquatic Center

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, along with County Council President Andrew Friedson and other county officials, celebrated the grand opening of the new Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC).

The 120,000-square-foot facility, located in the heart of the Silver Spring Central Business District, offers a wide range of recreational activities and features, including pools, a gymnasium, a fitness center, movement and dance studios, multipurpose rooms, and more.

County Executive Elrich emphasized the SSRAC’s significance for the Silver Spring community, stating, “The residents of downtown Silver Spring and nearby communities have been looking forward to the opening of this facility, and I think they will be impressed with the amenities and activities there.” The SSRAC is the first county recreation center in downtown Silver Spring and aims to provide opportunities for residents to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The opening of the SSRAC marks a significant milestone for the County, as it combines a recreation center, indoor natatorium, and community space under one roof, along with an affordable housing high-rise building, making it a challenging and highly unique project for DGS and the first of its kind for Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Recreation Director Robin Riley highlighted the community engagement efforts that went into the development of the SSRAC, stating, “Our team has been working tirelessly to get this first-of-its-kind center ready for our community.” The facility offers a variety of programming, with some classes and programs free for county residents.

Various programs at the SSRAC will be free for county residents, although some classes and programs have a fee, and pool access requires paid admission or membership. County residents are encouraged to sign up for a free RecFit pass to access the fitness room, open gym/drop-in activities, and the game room.
