The Charles County Charter Board will host a series of public meetings in each Commissioner district to inform residents about and hear input on its charge to draft and present voters with a Charter to transition Charles County from a Code Home Rule to a Charter form of government.
The Charter Board, established and appointed by the Board of County Commissioners, has undertaken an extensive review of Charter government in Maryland, including input from current and former elected officials and professional staff from counties across the state.
The Charter Board will submit the draft charter to the Board of Charles County Commissioners by June 1, 2024. After submittal, it will be publicly advertised at least twice in the following 30 days.
The draft charter will be presented on the ballot for voter approval during the general election in November 2024. If approved, the Charter will take effect within 30 days or as outlined in the charter document for the transition process.
