Feds Invest $2.6 Billion in Maryland’s Infrastructure, With More to Come

The federal government’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has directed $2.6 billion so far to Maryland, with more investment expected.

As of February this year, the federal government has invested nearly $2.6 billion in Maryland through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The bulk of these funds ($2.3 billion) have gone to transportation projects, i.e., roads, bridges, public transit, ports, and airports. Additionally, $144 million has been spent on clean water projects. Over 44 projects have received funding, and federal officials project that number to grow substantially as more grant opportunities open up. It’s worth noting that a significant portion of BIL funding has been steered toward rural communities and historically underserved populations.

Top Ten Counties That Received BIL Funding so far:

  1. Prince George’s – nearly $103 million
  2. Baltimore County – nearly $56 million
  3. Dorchester – nearly $48 million**
  4. Anne Arundel – nearly $40 million
  5. Howard – nearly $31 million
  6. Montgomery – nearly $25 million
  7. Baltimore City – nearly $18 million
  8. Washington – nearly $16 million
  9. Frederick – just over $15 million
  10. Wicomico – nearly $14 million

The BIL is a long-term initiative with funding set to become available over the next five years. Funds awarded thus far only represent a fraction of the total projected investment. This is something counties should be aware of as they plan for future projects.
