Frederick County Government Recognized as Sustainability Leader

Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford and Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles announced the annual Maryland Green Registry Sustainability Leadership Awards and environmental results.

According to the Maryland Department of Energy website, the winners included Frederick County Government, Baltimore Community ToolBank, Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and West Nottingham Academy. Winners were chosen based on their commitment to continuous improvement and environmental results achieved through sustainable practices. Environmental achievements for Frederick County Government, according to the Sustainability Leadership Award, include:

  • Actively working toward meeting greenhouse gas reduction goals of 50% from baseline levels by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
  • Completed energy assessments of 25 county buildings and upgraded lighting, roofing, and mechanical equipment.
  • Met the Maryland Smart Energy Communities goal of reducing 20% of building electricity usage using renewables.
  • Powers the county’s electric vehicles through large photovoltaic arrays, and is building a parking lot solar canopy.
  • Achieved LEED Silver for Cities and Communities.

“The coronavirus pandemic has presented many challenges. Members of the Maryland Green Registry have displayed great resilience as they continue to move forward,” said Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford. “Thank you to members of the Maryland Green Registry for your commitment to innovation and sustainability in the workplace. Organizations like yours make our state competitive, and keep Maryland open for business.”

“Maryland is a national leader in innovative green business practices, especially among our more than 600 registry members,” Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles said. “We salute these environmental stewards who continue to show it pays to be green.”
