MIA Welcomes Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane

The Maryland Insurance Administration announced the addition of new Insurance Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane.

Commissioner Birrane will replace former Commissioner Al Redmer Jr., who now serves as the executive director of the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund. Redmer served as Insurance Commissioner from 2003 to 2005 as well as from 2015 to 2020. Governor Larry Hogan stated that Birrane “will be vital in helping in helping the Maryland Insurance Administration navigate legal matters amidst this challenging economic climate.” Birrane’s father held the position of Maryland Insurance Commissioner under former Governors Mandel and Lee.

From the press release:

“The Maryland Insurance Administration has a well-deserved reputation for fair, rational and transparent regulation,” Commissioner Birrane said. “On a daily basis, the staff of the Administration does a remarkable job of protecting Maryland insurance consumers both with respect to individual concerns and with respect to the health and solvency of companies and the industry as a whole within our state. I am thrilled at the opportunity to work beside them.”
