The Open Meetings Act in a Time of Social Distancing

virtual meetings-video-conference-4997458_1280_Pixabay_5-8-2020_VWThe need to protect public health during the COVID-19 pandemic has led governments to cancel in person meetings and begin to explore how to conduct meetings remotely. But how can we ensure that these remote meetings comply with the Maryland Open Meetings Act and maximize opportunities for public participation? How can we foster democracy in a time of emergency?

The Academy for Excellence in Local Governance, a partnership of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, the Maryland Municipal League, and the Maryland Association of Counties, is proud to offer a free Zoom webinar for local government officials exploring these questions, sponsored by the Local Government Insurance Trust. The webinar will feature presentations by John Mathias, County Attorney for Frederick County, and Frank Johnson, Deputy City Attorney for the City of Gaithersburg.
