Maryland’s county governments suspend utility bills, identify health services, and connect furloughed federal workers with State and BGE assistance.
As home to a large number of federal employees, the federal furlough has a particularly large effect on Maryland. County governments home to many federal employees, in particular those in the Washington D.C. area, have stepped in to help residents in need to find resources during the partial federal shutdown.
Howard County has released a graphic about available resources, and the government website encourages its dissemination, stating
“As the federal government shutdown continues, please share this Howard County Government resource list for those affected employees who might be experiencing difficulties during this challenging time. We appreciate our community partners who are taking steps to alleviate the impact of this furlough.”
Angela D. Alsobrooks, County Executive, Prince George’s County, states,
“Many Prince Georgians are living in uncertain times as the partial federal government shutdown continues. While our friends and neighbors are faced with making tough financial decisions, your government and its partners have worked collaboratively to provide relief. We hope these resources will offer some level of security and stability for your families during this difficult time. Please know that while things may have grinded to a halt in Washington, we are continuing to fight and serve on your behalf.”
Baltimore County Government’s site, Support and Relief Programs Available During Shutdown shares,
“Baltimore County is home to more than 15,000 federal employees. While the majority of those individuals work at the Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where the shutdown has a minimal effect, we know there are County residents who are struggling with a loss of income as a result of the federal shutdown. There are also many contractual workers in the County who are affected.”
Many counties, including Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s counties (links below) have assembled furlough relief information for their residents.
