An Aegis article (2018-10-26) reported that Harford County Council President Richard “Dick” Slutzky will receive a LetterWinners of Distinction honor from Syracuse University. LetterWinner of Distinction is the highest honor that can be awarded by the University to a letter winning student-athlete. Slutzky is being awarded for his respective career and community contributions.
The article discussed Slutzky’s wrestling career and subsequent Harford County teaching and wrestling coaching activities. The article stated that many people in Harford County still refer to Slutzky as “Coach.”
The article highlighted Slutzky’s unexpected journey to growing up in Long Island to attending Syracuse. From the article:
“Syracuse was very late in the game. They came in early spring, late winter and most kids have already filled out their applications for college. I thought I was going to Hofstra and Syracuse called, and about half of the top-notch coaches on Long Island went to Syracuse,” Slutzky said. “Syracuse was the hotbed recruiting area for Long Island wrestling, which was at the time, arguably one of the two or three hotbeds of wrestling in the United States. …
“I’m so grateful that I made the choice to go to Syracuse and there are opportunities for me in education. There are opportunities for me in athletics. The support that they gave me,” Slutzky said. “I’m as Orange [referring to the university’s color] as you can get. I watch all their football games and basketball games.”
The article stated that previous LetterWinner of Distinction recipients included: football player Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little, Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim, NBA star and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, baseball National League MVP Jim Konstanty, and former New England Patriots player Jim Nance.
Slutzky is not running again and will end his tenure with the County Council in December.
