Question: Did you know that the oldest, still active lighthouse in Maryland is in Calvert County?
It’s true! Cove Point Light was built in 1828 and is located just south of Calvert Cliffs State Park. It was run by lighthouse keepers until 1986 when the light was finally automated. The light was in good condition, with much equipment remaining from prior years. Ownership of the Cove Point Light Station was officially transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to the Calvert County Government in September 2000. The Calvert Marine Museum began offering tours of the light station in 2002. Since then it has been administered by the Calvert Marine Museum, which allows access to the light and grounds in the summer months. The keeper’s house can be rented as a vacation home or for a special event or wedding.
Cove Point remains an active aid to navigation and is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay.
