The Smart Growth Subcabinet will be hosting a meeting and listening session at the 2015 MACo December Winter Conference. County officials are invited to attend the meeting and offer input on what is working and what is not working with Maryland’s Smart Growth Policy. The Subcabinet’s role is to advise the Governor on Smart Growth, oversee the State’s Priority Places Strategy, and support sustainable communities. The Subcabinet’s membership includes most of the cabinet secretaries as well as representatives from the Maryland Energy Administration and the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education.
The Subcabinet was originally established as the Smart Growth and Neighborhood Conservation Subcabinet in 1998 by executive order and codified in statute in 2001. In an effort to promote better collaboration, outreach, and transparency with local governments, the Subcabinet intends to hold regular meetings at both MACo and Maryland Municipal League conferences going forward.
Description
The Governor’s Smart Growth Subcabinet is holding a public forum for county and municipal elected leaders and planning officials, as well as all convention attendees. This will be an opportunity for elected leaders and planning officials to discuss with the Subcabinet local government issues relating to activities that affect smart growth, development, neighborhood conservation and resource management. The Subcabinet helps implement Maryland’s Smart Growth Policy, recommending to the Governor changes in State law, regulations, and procedures needed to support the Policy.
