Washington County Planning Commission Approves Medical Cannabis Growing and Processing Facility

An October 6 Herald-Mail Media article reported that the Washington County Planning Commission has unanimously approved an application by Green Thumb Industries LLC, for locating a medical cannabis growing and processing center in the Hopewell Valley Industrial Park west of Hagerstown.  From the article:

Having the planning for its proposed facility completed and securing local jurisdictional support allow the company’s subsidiary GTI-Maryland to be “shovel ready” and positioned to begin construction immediately if awarded one of the state’s 15 cultivation licenses later this year, officials said Tuesday.

“We feel really good about going into the licensing process with a shovel-ready project,” said Sterling Crockett, a partner with GTI-Maryland. “We think that really sets us apart.”  …

The Washington County Board of Commissioners endorsed the proposal by GTI in July.

Two other companies — Harvest Inc. in Hancock and Peake Releaf in Hagerstown — have proposed cultivation and processing operations in the county, underscoring what is expected to be strong competition for the state licenses.

The article stated GTI’s proposed growing and processing will be developed on a 20-acre parcel and initially include a 45,000 square foot indoor-growing facility.  The project is estimated to provide about $12 million in investment in the local economy.
