School Boards Issue Call to Action on Governor’s Budget

The Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) issued a call to action on the Governor’s budget yesterday over funding for the Geographic Cost of Education Index, a grant formula that provides extra education funding to counties where the cost of teacher salaries and other educational expenses are higher. MABE writes,

As you have been watching the legislative session unfold, you undoubtedly understand what’s at stake. Governor Hogan continues a game of chicken with budget negotiations and nearly $70 million for our schools is at risk. He has refused to release this funding unless the General Assembly passes his legislative agenda, including a voucher scheme that uses public dollars to fund private schools and give corporations tax breaks.

Thirteen counties, with 80% of our students, would be affected by Gov. Hogan’s threatened cuts. The governor would achieve this cut by refusing to fully fund the Geographic Cost of Education Index, even though the General Assembly has provided funding to do so.
