MACo’s January 2015 Winter Conference is rapidly approaching and will take place from January 7-9 at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Maryland. The theme of the conference is “The Road Ahead” and will focus on local government legislative priorities for the upcoming General Assembly Session, integrating newly elected officials, and building relationships with new legislators and the new Administration.
One panel will focus on the importance of county parks and recreation departments and Program Open Space in improving both the quality of life and health of Maryland’s citizens.
Description: Your parks and recreation department performs a vital and increasingly diverse role within your county’s government. Besides offering traditional indoor and outdoor recreational activities, your parks and rec department is also involved in land conservation acquisitions, health and wellness initiatives, and providing social venues for target populations such as senior citizens. As citizen expectations have risen over recent years, departments have struggled to provide more services in the face of uncertain State aid. Panelists will provide an overview of a parks and recreation department, highlight the importance and role of Program Open Space, and discuss ongoing challenges.
Speakers:
- Laura Wetherald, Chief, Bureau of Recreation and Administrative Services, Recreation and Parks, Howard County
- Ann H. Jones, Director, Partners for Open Space
- Dr. Maria K. Brown, Physician, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
Date & Time: Thursday, January 8, 2015; 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
