Charles County to Expand Transportation Service, Reactivate Human Relations Commission

Charles County Commissioners approved a new VanGo route and reactivated the county’s Human Relations Commission during a recent regularly scheduled meeting.  As reported by Southern Maryland Newspapers Online,

…commissioners unanimously approved the creation of a new VanGO route that would service St. Charles and simultaneously improve the program’s Indian Head route.

The new route would include a stop at the new St. Charles High School and operate on one-hour intervals as a 30-minute loop from VanGO’s new Waldorf park-and-ride transfer pavilion at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Smallwood Drive.

Commissioners also directed the county attorney to draft a code amendment to update and reactivate the Human Relations Commission.

Currently inactive, the commission was established “to promote understanding and harmony of relationship between the people of the County through the study of the nature and all causes of social friction and prejudice and the advancement of means for the alleviation of these problems and to otherwise further the American ideal of equality and justice,” according to the county code.

Commissioners’ Vice President Reuben B. Collins II (D) said he would like the commission to become a deferral agency, which could take an active role in investigating Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints.
