Governor O’Malley Appoints Members of Retirement Security Task Force

As reported by the Governor’s Office, Governor O’Malley has announced the names of appointees to the Governor’s Task Force to Ensure Retirement Security for All Marylanders.  The Task Force is charged with developing strategies that will address threats to retirement security in Maryland and devise a path toward retirement solvency for Maryland’s private sector workforce.

“This Task Force convenes some of the brightest minds in Maryland to tackle one of the toughest challenges facing our State: ensuring that Marylanders are able to enjoy a stable and secure retirement,” said Governor O’Malley.

As described in the press release, the group will begin meeting immediately and work to develop recommendations, present a report to the Governor by December 4, 2014. For more information, including bios of all members, see the complete press release from the Governor’s Office.

Retirement security will be a topic at next week’s MACo Conference. In the Wake of Detroit: Public Pension Liabilities, sponsored by Human Resources Affiliate and moderated by The Honorable Edward J. Kasemeyer, Chairman of the Maryland State Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, will include a discussion of state and local pension liabilities and benefit changes that aim to reduce liabilities. Elizabeth K. Kellar, President/CEO, Center for State and Local Government Excellence will provide a national perspective on the issue, and insight into the Detroit case.

This session will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014 from 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm.
