Legislation (SB 18) that would have required inspections of balconies in certain multi-family properties failed to receive enough votes to pass 3rd reading on the Senate floor on March 14.
As previously reported on Conduit Street, MACo did not take a position on the bill as introduced because the bill’s provisions addressed concerns previously raised by the counties. However, the bill was passed out of the Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs with amendments that inadvertently altered the critical county provisions. MACo worked with the bill’s sponsor, Senator Ron Young, to create new amendments that restored the altered provisions.
While the proposed MACo amendments were offered by Senator Young and adopted by the Senate, the bill failed to gather enough votes to pass over to the House. The 21-25 vote means that the bill is dead, at least for this Session.
