Description: Local governments have long held the primary authority to engage in land use planning and maintain professional staff dedicated to this goal. However, recent state and federal land use and environmental mandates have complicated this important mission. During a time of county budget stress, employee furloughs, and reduced staff for county governments, county planning departments are called upon to do more work than ever. Speakers will discuss the growing list of responsibilities for local planners, and how it affects a county’s ability to reach its mandated and desired objectives.
Speakers:
- Phillip R. Hager, Director of Land Use, Planning, and Development, Carroll County
- Larry R. Tom, Director of Planning and Zoning, Anne Arundel County
- Gerrit Knaap, PhD, Executive Director, National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education
