NACo Urges Continuation of Off-System Bridge Program

As the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure works to reauthorize national surface transportation policies, NACo is urging lawmakers to maintain the dedicated funding for off-system bridges in the Highway Bridge Program (HBP) in SAFETEA-LU, or a comparable program, in the next surface transportation reauthorization bill.

Off-system bridges are generally owned by local governments.  The HBP in SAFETEA-LU requires states to expend not less than 15% of their annual apportioned highway bridge funding on off-system bridges.  There is concern that this program could be in jeopardy in the reauthorization process.

NACo requests that you contact members of your Congressional delegation stating your support of the Off-System Bridge program.  It is suggested that you call the Capital Switchboard (202)224-3121 and ask to speak with the staff person who handles transportation issues in your member’s office.

Additional information can be found in a letter that was sent by members of Congress to the leadership of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
