Anne Arundel County, Commissioner, District 5
Politics is a family tradition in Dick Ladd’s family. Having watched his father preside over community meetings in a small New England town fostered a sense of public service in Ladd. However before he was able to enter into the political arena, he joined the Army, which resulted in two combat tours as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Throughout the course of his twenty year career with the Army, Ladd was awarded four bronze stars,16 air medals, and served as a Deputy Undersecretary of the Army.
Retirement has provided Ladd the opportunity to plant roots and participate in his community. He and wife Sabra, along with a poodle and a Maine coon cat, live on the Broadneck Peninsula overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. His primary volunteer commitment is to the Hospice of the Chesapeake. He has served two terms as President of the Hospice Cup, raising over a million dollars for the charity.
Ladd and his wife often visit friends and relatives in Scituate, Massachusetts, and in San Diego, and they welcome visits from children and grandchildren. Both are proud members of the Red Sox Nation.
Ladd has fulfilled two of his dreams by living on the water and holding elected office. With a passion for big band music and jazz, and inspired by musicians Russ Malone and Joe Pass, he would love to learn to play guitar someday.
