A recent report on WBAL TV emphasized the need for more oversight of junk dealers and scrap metal processors. Apparently, someone is stealing tree grates in a Baltimore neighborhood and is believed to be making money on them. Residents are hoping something can be done.
“One by one, we noticed the tree grates disappearing,” resident Bill Reuter said. “I’d love to see the scrap metal dealers alerted to this because somewhere, someone is cashing those in, and they should be arrested or put the grates back.”
The Senate Finance Committee is currently considering legislation to strengthen the oversight of this industry. MACo supported the bill with amendments requesting that a non-preemption clause replace the current local pre-emption and that stronger reporting language be included to aid in enforcement.
